CHARMING BAVARIA
Ellen von Unwerth
Ellen von Unwerth is a German photographer who explores the femininity of her models with the deepest respect for their being and personality. She has herself worked as a model for ten years before switching to the other side of the camera. Her work has since been published in countless magazines like Vogue, Interview, Vanity Fair and i-D.
Victoria’s Secret, Banana Republic and Diesel are some of her main advertising campaigns. Ellen von Unwerth’s playful humour is felt throughout the pages of her album Heimat, depicting an enchanted travel through Bavaria. German publisher Taschen gathered the pictures of this voyage on a high-quality publication. The famous fashion photographer returns to her homeland with a group of beautiful girls ready for some fun and adventure in the hilly fields of the region, with its dense, mysterious forests, in close contact with century-old traditions. Von Unwerth’s heroines travel through the countryside, praising the Bavarian highlights and specialities, devouring pretzels, having fun in the bucolic landscapes and flirting with farm boys in their leather shorts. Combining old-fashioned charm with a rebellious character and subverting traditional feminine and masculine roles, Heimat vibrates with a fresh, provocative, full of spirit eroticism, inhabited by the artist’s love for this magnificent countryside. Taschen also publishes a limited edition of some of the photos from the album.
